GSI Outdoors Bugaboo Camper Cookset

Customer Reviews

I took this cooking kit out camping where we had to pack everything in and keep it as light as possible. For that purpose it was perfect. We and used it day and night. Our heat source was a single propane burner meant for backpacking. Loved the covers for straining water and it working great until one evening while cooking, we notice the cover was melting on one side. The heat was off center and was reaching around the pot. This caused the cover to melt. Another day, the same thing happened with the smaller cover. So now I have two great pots with melted lids. I think GSI needs to rethink the cover compound to make it more heat resistant. More important was a safety issue we discovered. While we were boiling water one night, we lifted the pot off the stove with the collapsible handle, and it folded when we had it just about an inch off the fire. It could have led to serious scalding so we were really baffled at how they could make this folding feature but not have a more reliable locking feature. It's a great kit but please be careful.
Update: GSI is adjusting the compound and sending me new lids though not with the new compound but at least I know how to keep them from melting. They said that a heat shield will direct more heat up and that's probably what happened since we use one when we cooked. They are also sending me a new handle as mine was possibly defective.

I really like this set, and am very pleased with it. the nesting design allows so much for a moderately small package. the design is solid for the most part and everything heats evenly. the grips on the cups are wonderful, I can hold a HOT cup of tea and only feel warmth in my hand. I can go on and list positives, but I will leave it at I am happy and would recommend this.
that being said, I want to list the cons:
-the handle, while being clever and fun to play with, there is only one, so you can only use one pot or the pan at a time unless you buy more. it also gets hot if you leave the pot or pan on the stove for more than a few minutes. make sure you use a towel or something so you don't get burnt.
-the lids are nice and easy to use, the built in strainer is useful, but there is no way to close it. this isn't a big deal for some things, but for steaming rice I had to use a wet towel to cover the strainer. I haven't had my set long so I can't comment on whether they indeed do warp or not. mine have not yet.
-the pots are of high quality, but I will have to buy a separate, smaller one, the two included will be great for 4 people, but they are big for doing something like heating a pasta sauce.
-the "bowls" are kinda useless. I'd have a heck of a time eating cereal or soup out of something so narrow. they do make for great extra cups and do function as bowls fine, they're just a bit awkward.
-the carrying bag/wash basin is very nice, but the "handle" isn't really a handle, more of a strap to keep everything together. don't count on using it to carry the set. I'd like to see a carrying bag of some type, even if it's an extra purchase.
but like I said, I like this set and would replace it with the same if something happened to it. I still give it 4 stars, and the cons are more of me nit picking
